Maintaining a work/life balance like Juleigh Sitton’s isn’t easy, but it is possible. Tips like these can help: • Define Your Goals To balance work and life, first define what it is you want. Whether that’s more time with your children or starting a new career, write it down. After at least a day, come back to your list of aspirations and make any adjustments you feel are necessary. Wait one more day, and then write these aspirations as tangible, achievable goals. • Eliminate What Doesn’t Fit A work/life balance isn’t always about adding new things to feel fulfilled. It’s often about eliminating the unnecessary so the rest can fall into place. For one week, keep a list of everything you do throughout the day and for how long. Be honest. If you spend twelve five-minute increments on Facebook during your workday, record each one, because this ultimately equals an hour lost. Once your week is over, categorize your activities under those that fit with your goals and those that do not/those that are unnecessary. Exercise self-discipline as you eliminate everything that doesn’t fit with your goals. Remember, professionals like Juleigh Sitton never stop refining their schedule and do not stop focusing on their work/life balance. Create habits that you can maintain for years so you can find a balance that lasts.

Apart from the pure thrill of hiking in the woods or the mountains, there are several other benefits of hiking. Hiking is a strenuous physical activity and offers excellent health benefits. Here are some important things every hiker should know.
Exercise Hiking is a physical activity that requires you to be fit. Instead of trying to exercise a lot, it is recommended to exercise a little, but often. If you push yourself too hard working out, it will make your sore, and you will not be able to train for some time. If you are training for a hike, it's best to start walking for 20-minutes, every other day and increase the distance and time 10% every week until the time of the hike. Use a Foam Roller A foam roller is an excellent piece of equipment you can use to exert pressure on tight muscles. If your muscles are stiff, the foam roller can be used to release tension and restore the muscles to optimum length. Using the foam roller on muscles like the hamstrings, calves and quadriceps will help relieve stress and get you ready for your hike. Before and After It is very important to perform dynamic stretches before you start the hike. Preparing your body and muscles for activity is important, and the stretching will help prevent ankle sprains and pulled muscles. Stretching after a hike will help prevent muscle imbalances and helps in speeding up the recovery process. Strength Training Strength training is extremely beneficial to hiking as it helps strengthen important muscles in the body. Spend time strengthening your core, hips, waist and upper legs, as these are the muscles that you will be using the most when you are hiking. Planking is a great way to improve your posture and strengthen the spine muscles. Juleigh Sitton enjoys hiking and is a member of three hiking groups. Being a lawyer has its benefits. Diverse Practice Areas Lawyers have the unique opportunity to work in diverse practice areas. Every industry needs legal advice and with the increase in industry segmentation, the need for lawyers specializing in several niches has considerably increased. Lawyers are needed in areas like employment law, green law, civil litigation, foreclosure law, and industrial law; the list is just endless. Transferable Skills If lawyers have a Juris Doctorate, they don’t necessarily have to practice law, but can serve in several other positions. In fact, lawyers have the opportunity to develop their skills and serve in other fields like legal consulting, writing, management, academia, and mediation. A lawyer doesn’t have to limit himself to one or two areas of work but has various openings where they can work. Flexibility Most people working at regular jobs have to be tied down to the office desk for eight hours each day, but a lawyer has a very flexible job. Lawyers can choose the hours they want to work, and they also set their fees. They are in full control of how much they want to earn and how much time they want to spend working. When you hear of hiking, probably the image that comes to mind is that of road-tested trekkers with heavy backpacks taking on mountain trails for weeks at a time. Or maybe you think of the hobbits in the popular franchise, Lord of the Rings, trekking through amazing scenery on a word-saving quest.
Regardless, hiking is a good activity that can provide health benefits for a lifetime. Although it is sometimes tough, it doesn’t always have to be. Hiking for you can mean a few hours around the neighborhood on a Saturday morning. It’s especially good if you are not ready to get into running as a means for keeping fit. As this piece is catered to beginners, we are not talking about hiking the Appalachian Trail, but rather less challenging trails that won’t require you to carry a tent or spend a week away. The length of your hiking experience can fit the amount of free time you have. Decide beforehand if you want to bring friends along, or you want to hike solo. Doing it solo might give you time to meditate, but it can be dangerous if anything were to happen. Having a friend along is encouraged. Lastly, determine how much of a challenge you want to tackle. Going on an eight-hour hike on your first try, with minimal fitness levels, is not wise. Pick locations that will allow you to enjoy the hike and stop when necessary. There’s no need to be a hero and realize you are eight hours away from your car and extremely tired. Juleigh Sitton is a member of a hiking club in Asheville, NC, as she prepares to take on a summer hiking trip with her daughter. The bond between a mother and daughter is a unique one. Some mothers and daughters spend more time talking and sharing moments than they do with their individual friends. Others talk once every two weeks. Some see each other on a daily basis. Others only get together during the summer. Some pairs share everything about their lives. Others avoid touching on the personal stuff. Like any other relationship, the mother-daughter relationship has its positive and negative faces. Some mothers are overly parental and demanding. From their perspective, a mom may be trying to get through to a daughter she feels doesn’t listen to her often. The good thing about relationships is that they can be improved, and here’s how to enhance the one with your daughter or mother. Be the bigger person When it comes to reconciling after a clash, always be the bigger person. Don’t wait for the first move to come from the other person. Waiting is what keeps relationships stuck. Work on yourself Many people think that the only way for a relationship to improve is for the other person to change. But their actions don’t define you; work on your attitude and reactions. Think of the relationship as a dance. When your partner changes their movement, the dance also changes. Communicate Lack of communication is a common challenge for many relationships, including the mother-daughter one. No one is a mind reader, so be clear and express your feelings. But be gentle in your approach. Juleigh Sitton loves to spend time with her daughter, and cherishes every moment they get to hang out and participate in hiking. |
